With crisp air and golden leaves surrounding the landscape, the autumn is the perfect time to visit Bronllys Castle. Perched above the River Llynfi, nly a 5 minute drive away, this remarkable Norman stronghold offers a stunning autumn setting and a glimpse into centuries of history. Founded around 1100 AD by Anglo-Norman lord Richard Fitz Pons, Bronllys Castle evolved from an earthwork motte and bailey into the impressive stone keep we see today.

Overlooking a picturesque valley, the site likely stands on what was once a pre-Norman princely court, or llys. Originally constructed as a strategic motte and bailey fortress, Bronllys was later strengthened by Walter de Clifford in the mid-12th century with the addition of the stone “principal tower.” By the 13th century, this tower had transformed into a two-story round keep, complete with a vaulted basement, and was later crowned with a beautiful three-windowed storey in the 14th century.

One of the castle’s intriguing features is a dungeon that once held prisoners (unfortunately now blocked off), adding an air of mystery. A landscaped pentagonal enclosure, bordered by earth banks and ditches, still surrounds the north side, creating a picturesque barrier now surrounded by the warm tones of autumn.

Take in the scenery as you explore the castle, making it the ideal autumn adventure for families and history enthusiasts alike. Enjoy the season’s beauty while delving into the storied past of Bronllys Castle. And if you fancy a little more exploring afterwards, there is a lovely footpath just down the road from the Castle with some gorgeous views of the Castle.
