Some Frequently Asked Questions about our Shepherds Hut

Most Common Questions
Q: Do you have Wifi?
A: Yes we do have Wifi, although as per our terms and conditions, we provide no guarantee in case of network failure.
Q: Are you within walking distance of a pub?
A: Yes, the Griffin in Llyswen is only a few minutes walk away
Q: How many people does the hut sleep?
A: The hut is designed as a cosy escape for two adults.
Q: Is the hut warm in colder months?
A: Yes — it’s fully insulated and has underfloor heating and a log burner (which you don’t need to heat the hut but is an option if you choose to light it) to keep you toasty all year round.
Q: Do you allow dogs?
A: Absolutely! We welcome up to 2 well-behaved dogs (possibly more if you ask as it is more dependant on size as the hut is only small). They’ll love the countryside walks right from the doorstep.
Q: Is the hut suitable for children?
A: Our hut is designed as a couples’ hideaway, so it isn’t suitable for children due to the Hot Tub and location to the river.

Facilities
Q: What cooking facilities are there?
A: The hut has a kitchenette with everything you’ll need for simple meals, including a microwave grill and a hob with pans and a grill tray provided with other utensils.
Q: What about bathrooms?
A: You’ll have your own private ensuite with a proper full shower, loo, and sink — no sharing required. There is no roughing it with a caravan toilet with us- we provide a proper full flushing toilet and an electric shower.
Q: Is there a hot tub?
A: Yes — your private electric hot tub overlooks the River Wye. Perfect for stargazing or soaking after a long walk.
Q: Is the Hot Tub electric?
A: Yes, the Hot Tub is electric so there is no lighting a fire, and waiting around for the tub to heat up or trying to control the temperature when the fire gets too hot when you get back after your walk, just pop in the shower, and you can get straight in the tub.
Q: How do you keep the hot tub clean and safe?
A:We take hot tub care very seriously so you can simply relax and enjoy it. Here’s what we do:
🧼 Between every stay – the water is fully changed, and the tub is thoroughly cleaned and refilled ready for you.
🧽 Regular deep cleans – once a month, the hot tub gets an intensive deep clean to include all pipework in addition to our normal changeover cleans between guests.
💧 Water testing – we test and balance the water chemicals daily to make sure everything is perfectly safe and comfortable.
🔍 Independent testing – monthly and quarterly laboratory water tests are carried out for extra reassurance.
This means when you sink into the bubbles, you can do so knowing the hot tub is spotless, safe, and looked after to the highest standards. 🛁✨
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like any further information around this.
Please be aware this does mean we will require access to the tub to test each day, we try to do this when guests go out to minimise any disruption to your break, but there will be times when due to our own lives we may need to test when you are in the hut but we will try our best not to disturb you.

Q: How far is the hut from the river?

Q: Are there places to eat nearby?
A: Yes — we’re lucky to have lots of excellent pubs and restaurants close to us, with the Griffin in Llyswen just a short few minutes stroll away, or the Felin Fach Griffin (featured in the Michelin Guide) just a 5 minute drive away. Please see our Places to Eat page for ideas.
Q: What activities are nearby?
A: Riverside walks, canoeing, hiking in the Brecon Beacons, browsing Hay-on-Wye’s bookshops, and plenty more. Please see our Things to do, Places to go Pages or our Blog for inspiration.

Dogs
Q: Is the garden secure?
A: The hut has a large garden which is fenced all around, with 4ft livestock fencing, with a small section visible on the photos of post and rail for the view of the river. The fence alongside the fields also has a hedge.
Q: Can my dog go on the bed?
Your dog is welcome on the bed, although in wetter or colder weather, we would prefer they didn’t so as to keep our bedding for longer, as when it gets stained we have to take it out of circulation and buy new bedding. We provide a fluffy green throw for use if you would like your dog to sit/sleep on the bed.
Q: Is there an extra charge for dogs?
A: If you book direct, there is no extra charge per dog.
Q: Do you provide anything for dogs?
A: We provide dog bowls and some tasty treats to help them settle in. Please bring their bed/blanket so they feel at home.
Q: Can I leave my dog in the hut while we go out?
A: For their safety and comfort, we ask that dogs aren’t left alone in the hut. Although they may be the best behaved pooch at home, dogs do not always feel the same in a new environment.
Q: Are there good walks nearby?
A: Absolutely! From riverside strolls to woodland trails and Brecon Beacons hikes, there’s plenty to keep tails wagging. Please see our dog page for inspiration.
Q: Are there any dog-friendly pubs or cafés nearby?
A: Yes — several local favourites welcome dogs, including our local Griffin, only a 2 minute walk away. Please see our Dog Friendly page for inspiration.
Q: What if my dog is reactive?
A: If you dog is reactive, please make us aware on booking so that we can ensure we do all possible to make your stay as relaxing as possible, whether that is making sure our dog doesn’t go near the hut during your stay, or making sure we don’t bring our children with us when we welcome you etc.
Q:Is there livestock in the fields adjacent to the hut?
During the month of April, we can guarantee there is no livestock in the fields adjacent to the hut, and more than likely there will be none from May to September however if this could be am issue, you would be best to check with us before booking as there may be a chance that there are sheep in the fields next door. There is a 4ft stock proof fence and a hedge in between the field with sheep in and the Hut garden.
