A Journey Through Talgarth Mill
Nestled a 5 minute drive away, in the charming town of Talgarth, Talgarth Mill stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and dedication to preserving local heritage. Restored to its full working order in 2011, this historic mill has been brought back to life. A community group undertook the monumental task of rebuilding the mill’s infrastructure and machinery, ensuring that milling once again became a thriving activity in Talgarth.

A Labour of Love
The restoration of Talgarth Mill was no small feat. A new mill wheel, forged by a skilled blacksmith located just two miles away, replaced the old one. The installation process was particularly challenging due to the mill’s location and the considerable weight of the new wheel.

Powered by Nature
The mill wheel is powered by water supplied from the restored leat, connected via a sluice gate to the River Ellwye, located just 100 metres upstream. This water supply is controlled by the millers during milling and is closed at the end of each day to preserve resources.
One of the best ways to experience Talgarth Mill is by exploring the leat and riverside gardens. Two walkways allow visitors to follow the water’s journey from the river to the wheel and back to join the river flow. These pathways provide stunning views of the waterwheel in action and offer a unique perspective on the mill’s operation alongside a cottage garden.
The gardens and viewing platforms are a haven for nature enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that calls this area home, including dippers, crayfish, trout, eels, and even otters. The tranquil environment offers a peaceful retreat and a chance to connect with nature.

A Community Effort
Today, Talgarth Mill is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, including millers, baggers, guides, and gardeners. Their collective effort ensures the mill’s long-term future and its continued role as a vital part of the local community. These volunteers bring the mill to life, sharing their knowledge and passion with visitors from near and far. There is also a bakery and a café on site alongside a craft shop selling locally made items.
