Sustainability

About

As we navigate the intricate tapestry of existence, we are constantly presented with choices, each a potential pathway to our future and our children’s future.

At Easy on the Wye Dog Friendly Shepherds Hut we try our best to support as many local or Welsh businesses as possible, alongside doing our best to protect the environment, in our welcome packs, our practices, actions and items we provide for you.

What do we do?

We Reduce, re-use and recycle as much as possible.

We have started planting trees around, and this project is ongoing alongside installing bat and bird boxes.

We have just installed a Car Charger to encourage our guests to do their part to save the environment with less emissions.

We try to conserve water where possible, and we will be using the water collected from the gutters to water the trees and plants around the Shepherds Hut.

We have used LED light bulbs inside the hut, and the fairy lights above the Hot Tub are solar powered.

We have provided energy efficient Kettle and Toasters for you to use, with a fast boil technology kettle, and a see through water gauge so you can measure exactly how much water you require to boil.

This is without mentioning our gorgeous Shepherds Hut itself, which comes from the lovely award winning Black Mountain Shepherds Huts based by Welshpool and is insulated with sheep’s wool to keep you cosy all year round.

We are committed using and promoting high quality, local, sustainable produce where possible to reduce air miles and keep revenue in the community including:

  • We shop local and support our local families and suppliers first and before we shop elsewhere, and then try our best to source Welsh items and produce where possible.
  • We ask our suppliers to use minimum packaging where possible and reuse or recycle packaging if possible.
  • Below is some more information on a few of the things we are doing and our suppliers.

Hot Tub

We provide an electric hot tub with an air source heat pump. The heat pump not only saves on electric but it also saves you on the time waiting to heat up,it is hot straight away, compared to a wood fired hot tub which takes hours and is then very a unreliable unmaintained temperature.

The pump takes over the electric heater and optimizes the increase in temperature inside the Hot Tub.

Sugarcane Toilet Paper

Sugarcane Super Soft Toilet Paper helps keep the planet green!

Sugarcane is made from the left-over plant after the sugar has been extracted. Being a by-product makes it even more sustainable than bamboo. Short and delicate fibres make it much softer than bamboo. It can break down in 4 seconds when flushed, helping to prevent blocked drains. It is harvested every 11 months whereas trees can take 30 years. They cram more paper into smaller cartons to reduce the cardon footprint for deliveries. Sugarcane has a 65% lower carbon footprint than recycled paper!

Toiletries

Myddfai Trading Company Ltd are a social enterprise that offers luxury toiletries and gifts.

In 2010, they began their journey with a vision to create opportunities for vulnerable individuals in the local community. They empower people by providing meaningful work experiences, fostering social interaction, and nurturing their confidence.

Reinvesting in the Community: As a social enterprise, all their earnings are reinvested back into the business and the community. They support local projects that benefit vulnerable individuals, such as donating to the ASD unit at a local high school for a sensory room. They employ team members with autism or learning difficulties, ensuring equal access to paid work opportunities.

Work Experience Programme: They collaborate with nearby organisations that offer assisted living for adults with additional learning needs, providing tailored work experiences. They partner with local high school’s autism units, providing valuable work experience to students. Their goal is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where every team member feels valued.
