When you’re on a romantic break at Easy on the Wye, Y Gaer is a lovely short cultural visit.
Located in the centre of Brecon, Y Gaer (meaning The Fort in Welsh) is more than just a museum or library — it’s a bold, imaginative space that blends the town’s classical past with its vibrant present.
A Fusion of Old and New
Housed in the refurbished Grade II listed Shire Hall, the building’s original grandeur shines through — particularly in the striking Victorian courtroom, which has been carefully restored and is an experience in itself. Below ground, you can even explore the old subterranean cells, where the past feels just a little too real…
The museum galleries showcase nationally significant collections — from archaeology to local history and Welsh art — with regular rotating exhibitions that keep things fresh and inspiring. On the top floor, the Brycheiniog Gallery takes you on a journey through the unique landscapes and character of Breconshire.

A Modern Space for Everyone
Looking for something more lively? Y Gaer also hosts poetry readings, art workshops, music events and community talks — so there’s often something going on to stumble into and enjoy.
Coffee, Creativity, and Culture
And yes — there’s a café too, run by the local college, because no visit is complete without a cuppa and a slice of something sweet. The relaxed vibe makes it an easy place to while away an hour (or three) after wandering the galleries.
A Great Stop on Your Brecon Break
Just a short drive from our hut, Y Gaer is ideal for adding a splash of culture to your countryside escape. Whether you’re escaping the weather, stretching your legs after a long lunch, or indulging your inner history buff, it’s free to visit, fully accessible, and full of inspiration.
